What is Vaginal Tightening?

Simply put, vaginal tightening is the practice of enhancing the tone, strength and elasticity of the vaginal muscles, it can be achieved by surgical, non surgical and general lifestyle approaches.

Non Surgical methods may include ‘Kegel Exercises’, vaginal cones, electrical simulation, or radiofrequency therapy which promotes collagen production and tissue tightening. These methods are generally cheaper and less effective than surgical one's, but are less invasive.

Surgical methods, which are the more effective vaginal tightening methods, involve reconstructive processes of the vaginal tissues and are typically performed by a gynaecologist of or a plastic surgeon. These may be sought for medical or cosmetic reasons.

What’s the difference between vaginal tightening and vaginal rejuvenation?

So, Vaginal tightening is a specific technique involved in vaginal rejuvenation. Vaginal rejuvenation can involve other procedures as well as vaginal tightening, aimed at restoring other functional and aesthetic aspects of the vaginal and vulvar area.

Methods of Vaginal rejuvenation can include

  • Vaginal tightening
  • Labiaplasty, which is the surgical modification of the labia minora and majora, for aesthetic or functional reasons.
  • Hormonal treatments, so the use of topical or systemic hormones to address vaginal atrophy or dryness, perhaps related to menopause.
  • Non surgical aesthetic treatments such as radiofrequency or laser, which not only tightens the vagina but also improves the general appearance of the vulvar and vaginal area

For vaginal tightening, the purpose for the procedure is most commonly associated with improving sexual satisfaction, addressing post-partum changes or natural ageing effects on vaginal elasticity. For vaginal rejuvenation, it is more of a broad enhancement of vaginal health, function, aesthetic appearance, vaginal dryness and urinary incontinence, etc.

How do I know which procedure is right for me?

If you are looking for a tighter vagina, to help improve you and your partners sexual enjoyment, confidence and intimacy, then we highly recommend our specialist vaginal tightening and pelvic floor reconstruction service. If you are wishing for more than just a vaginal tightening, such as aesthetic improvements, or medical improvements such as vaginal dryness, then a vaginal rejuvenation may be the best option. We would recommend to get in touch with us however, to discuss with one of our specialists, as they would be able to best advise you on what specific procedure suits you best.

What is the recovery time for surgical vaginal tightening?

Generally speaking, one’s individual circumstances can influence how much recovery time there is after a vaginal tightening procedure. Factors that influence this could be anything from your general health, to the extent of the surgery, and one’s adherence to post op care instructions. Having said this, a general timeline for recovery can be depicted as follows:

Immediate post op period (first few days)

Most patients can go home the day of or after surgery. Expect some pain and discomfort, natural swelling etc. This can be managed with persribed medication. Bed rest is recommended for the first few days and avoid strenuous activities!

Short term recovery (first 2 weeks)

Keep on avoiding strenuous activities such as heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, etc. Follow your surgeons instructions on cleanliness to prevent infection, and attend any follow up appointments to monitor the healing process.

Intermediate recovery (2 to 6 weeks)

Gradual return to activities, probably nothing too intense though. Also, the continuous monitoring, looking for any signs of potential complications which can involve unwanted discharge, severe pain, or fever.

Long term recovery (6 weeks plus)

You can expect to resume sexual intercourse at around 6-8 weeks after op, and regular exercise should be okay. It is always worth following your surgeons specific advice on this however. Full healing of the tissues can actually take several months, and it is always worth being aware of this post operation.

Tips for a smooth vaginal tightening recovery

  • Follow specialist instructions, adhere closely to your surgeons advice about post operative care

  • Rest adequately. Give your body the time it needs to recover after surgery.

  • Hydrate and eat well. Hydrated and a healthy diet is only going to aid your recovery.

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol, these are well known bad habits that hinder any recovery and cell regrowth.

  • Pelvic floor exercises. It can’t hurt to consider gentle pelvic floor exercises to maintain muscle tone, but please consult your surgeon to confirm you are safe to do this.

Does Vaginal Tightening Hurt?

Depending on the type of vaginal tightening you opt for, can determine what to expect in terms of pain and discomfort. For example, non surgical methods, although less effective than surgical one’s, most commonly offer less pain than the more invasive procedures.

Non surgical procedures and pain information

Kegel Exercises – these offer a minimum pain level, no discomfort. These exercises involve contracting and relaxing pelvic floor muscles, which if done correctly should offer no pain.

Vaginal cones – again this offers minimal pain, although can offer some slight discomfort or a feeling of pressure.

Electrical Stimulation – This method offers a slightly higher discomfort level to other non surgical vaginal tightening procedures. Patients may feel a tingling sensation during the use of electrical stimulation devices, but it should not be that painful.

Laser and radiofrequency treatments – again minimal to moderate pain. Maybe feelings of aslight discomfort or a sensation of heat during the procedure, local anaesthesia or numbing cream can be used with this however, to minimise the pain.

Surgical procedures, vaginoplasty and vaginal tightening with pelvic floor reconstruction.

As common sense would suggest, surgical procedures are more likely to cause pain for a patient. Post surgical pain and discomfort is expected, but one can expect this pain to decrease significantly over the proceeding days and weeks

Pain management post op

There are many ways one can manage post vaginal tightening op pain.

  1. Medication, over the counter and initial prescribed medication can help relieve pain post op, ibuprofen and acetaminophen are some recommended medicines to take.
  2. Post procedure care. Keeping on top of post vaginal tightening procedure care and instructions, avoiding strenous activity, attending regular check ups, for example can help with the management of post op risk and pain.
  3. Cold compresses – applying cold packs can help reduce swelling, and numb any pain sensations after your vaginal tightening operation.
  4. Rest – adequate rest to give your body enough time to recover naturally is crucial, after your vaginal tightening procedure.

Furthermore, your individual pain tolerances and general health can effect pain perception and recovery. It is worth discussing any pain concerns with your consultant either before or after surgery. They can provide detailed information on what to expect and how to manage your pain effectively.
